Pike Fishing In Toronto

#The past week or so I have been taking out clients fishing in the GTA for spring pike. Toronto is a great place for pike fishing because the average size of fish is pretty big and you don’t have travel too far to catch a world class size of fish. The biggest we caught so far this year was a 14lb beauty caught by Chris P. and his buddy Dieter, however there are much bigger in there, we saw a few that followed our baits in the 17-20lb class! We also lost few tanks that we never even saw!!

Bass Magnet and Berkley swinmbaits with an Owner darter head.

The baits we have been catching fish on are Smithwick Rogues in blue/sliver and black/sliver, Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 127 in Clown and American Shad, Chatterbait in purple/silver, gliding big Senko’s, Double Loon Spinner’s (#4/#5) and the hair jig and lizard combo. What has surprised me the most about the past couple of weeks has been our ability to catch pike in extremely dirty water. The water in the Toronto Harbour has been really murky due to winds and rain. The pike in the harbour are used to living in clear water most of the time so catching them in the dirt has been a big challenge in the past until a new discovery!! The big swimbaits from Mike Nabulsi’s Bass Magnet Baits and Berkley have been deadly in this dirty water. I’ve been rigging them on owner darter heads 3/8-1/2oz. These heads are key because they allow the bait to wobble side to side as well as the tail that goes nuts ! This extra action provides great vibration and the big profile provides fantastic visibility! So far I have not caught a single fish on any other bait in the dirty water other than these swimbaits. We’ve been fishing these baits on 30lb Fireline Braid on 7′3mh baitcasting outfit and on 7′mh spinning outfits also rigged with 30lb Fireline Braid.

#The location of the bigger fish has been different than in past years. The big fish have been relating to sand flats that drop off into deeper water, there has been very little weed growth thus far and this is why I believe that the fish are relating to sandy contour breaks better than anything. Sand flats also provide heat. With this cold spring the warmth provided by the sand has been really important because the heat helps the pike to diggest. This really increases the pikes activity level!

Guiding for these giant pike is such a blast. My new passion is putting people on to big fish and seeing their excitement! There is nothing more rewarding to me than hearing someone say that I helped them catch their biggest fish ever! My adrenalin pumps every time I see a clients excitement from hooking into a big fish.
